The exchangeable metering system consists of an upper and lower nozzle on each tundish strand. The upper nozzle is located within the tundish lining and conveys the steel to the controlling lower (exchangeable) nozzle, which determines the steel flow. This type of composite nozzle encases the zirconia insert within a thin metal can. The outer body between the zirconia insert and metal can generally is a fine-grained alumina mainly produced by the casting process.
